Learning disability (LD), according to the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC), is “a significantly reduced ability to understand new or complex information, to learn new skills (impaired intelligence), with a reduced ability to cope independently (impaired social functioning), which started before adulthood, with a lasting effect on development” (DHSC, 2001, p.14).

Person-centred care (PCC) can be a way to improve the care and support for persons with LDs, resulting in a better quality of life for them (McCausland et al., 2022; Nieuwenhuis et al., 2025). PCC refers to treating patients as equal partners in their care plan. It is personalised and coordinated such that it caters for each patient’s preferences and support needs (Health Foundation, 2014).
